CHAPTER 12

DAHLIA

Lucas embraced me when I got out of the car. “Your night has been eventful.”

I pressed a brief kiss to his lips, then twined my fingers with his. “You could say that. I had no idea what would happen when we planned on having lunch at the café today.”

Lucas brought our hands up and kissed the back of mine. “That’s usually how it works. You and your sisters are a formidable force that no shifter wants to face.”

Dani turned around where she was walking with Noah. “What do you mean? We’ve never hurt a shifter.”

Lucas lifted a shoulder. “Your capers speak for themselves. Not only are you powerful dragons, but you have kicked the asses of many powerful paranormals."

Noah tugged Dani’s hand. “They are also in awe of you guys. Many have asked how they can help here at the plantation just to be close.”

Kota stuck her head out of the back door. “They brought groceries earlier tonight. I could get used to that. I just fried another batch of chicken if you’re hungry.”

My stomach rumbled as we approached the house. “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.”

Dani snickered. “We really could eat one in our dragon forms.”

I rolled my eyes as I entered the kitchen. Through the door to the left, I could see that the dining room was full with Dre, Phi and their families. “We might get away with that when we visit Shackleford Banks. Otherwise, I’m pretty sure we’d be seen in a hot minute.”

Dani sighed as she filled her plate with food. “I miss visiting there. We haven’t been back in years.”

Our families used to take a trip up to North Carolina and spend a week on Harkers Island every year. It is a gorgeous place where the guys could go fishing while we lounged on the beach with a drink or took the kids kayaking. My children loved that annual trip. It was the one time we didn’t allow life to get in the way. And it wasn’t too hot up there in the summer, and that was a nice change from the heat of New Orleans.

“What are you guys talking about?” Phi asked from the dining room.

“It started with horses,” Dani replied, shooting a look at Rachel and Justin. I understood she didn’t want to tell the kids about eating them while we were dragons. Phi hadn’t told them everything, and even if she had, that would be disturbing for them to hear. “And moved to Shackleford Banks and Harkers Island. Dawson arranged for those houses this summer.”

Both kids clapped their hands. “Can we go with everyone, please?” Rachel asked, giving her parents puppy dog eyes.

I laughed at the way they begged. It reminded me of my kids. Phi smiled at them as she leaned forward on her elbows. “We will see what we can work out. I don’t have all the details yet.”

“I’d like to go,” Lucas said as he handed me a plate of food. I hadn’t seen him fill one for me.
